When shopping for auto insurance, be aware of the many variables required in order get an accurate quote. These variables include: driving information; coverage desired; year, make and model of the vehicle; claims history and premium discount items (such as air bags and alarms).
It's a good idea to shop for your auto insurance in and around your policy renewal dates; some companies penalize an insured for canceling prior to renewal. You should also give your agent/broker some lead-time to provide you with an accurate quote as a general rule, three to five business days is sufficient.

Many auto-insurance carriers have different companies under the same corporate umbrella this "tiered" approach is becoming more and more prevalent today. Depending on an individual's eligibility, a company can offer a client preferred, standard or sub-standard rates. (An increasingly important factor in determining eligibility is credit rating. Good versus bad credit can make the difference between preferred and standard rates, and save you about 10% on your premiums.)

An individual's insurance needs will change with time and circumstance. Familiarize yourself with your current insurance coverage(s). Shopping for insurance provides you with an excellent opportunity to review your present coverage. Review your liability coverage(s), personal injury protection and comprehensive and collision deductibles.
When considering new insurance policies to replace existing coverage, make certain that you are comparing 'apples-to-apples'. And in all cases, insist on a written quote.
